Scotty B’s Heart Donor Beanie
On the morning of September 20, 2022 at around 07:00 we woke up to a very exciting phone call from Dr. Kevin Koomalsingh, our Transplant Surgeon at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland - they had a heart for Scott! He received a heart transplant on Wednesday, September 21, 2022.
This next chapter of recovery we’ve been told is a long a difficult journey. Anyone that knows Scott knows he’ll be up for the challenge. Scott is strong and a fighter. He has more grit and dedication than anyone I’ve ever known.
Before his surgery, he asked the staff what the record for walking distance post-transplant was while in recovery and they told him 6 miles (1 month post-op) on the 8th floor. He told them he was going to walk a 10k (6.4 miles) on the 8th floor before he leaves the hospital. That attitude is what got him through his surgery and will get him through recovery. He was released after 2 weeks in the hospital, but his goal to walk a 10k in 1 month is still there. Every September 21st moving forward, we plan to run a 10k in celebration of this wonderful gift.
On September 21, 2022 Scott was born again. The recovery has not and will not be easy. But Scott is resilient and has more grit than anyone I have ever met. He inspires me so much. He has taught me to never make excuses, to fight for what I want, to know my worth, and to love every minute of this life we get to live. He is incredible.
If you are not a registered organ donor, I urge you to please reconsider. Because of a very special person, this amazing man and many others get to not only continue to live, but live a better quality life. Once Scott recovers, he’ll be able to hold his children. He’ll be able to work again. He’ll be able to be the active, adventurous man that he used to be. 1 organ donor can significantly impact the lives of 80+ people waiting for donations. That includes 8 lives that can be saved. I will be forever grateful to the donor that has given Scott a new life and 9/21 will forever be celebrated.
I made this collection to motivate anyone, to support Scotty in his recovery, or for y’all to participate in our annual 10k or to simply support Scott through this journey.
Cheers!
